Crayons

When we think of crayons we thing of the brand Crayola. Today crayons are made by many different companies that still have the ability to unleash our inner expression. So what is a crayon? According to Wikipedia. A crayon (or wax pastel) is a stick of pigmented wax used for writing or drawing. Wax crayons differ from pastels, in which the pigment is mixed with a dry binder such as gum Arabic and from oil pastels, where the binder is a mixture of wax and oil. Crayons are available at a range of prices and are easy to work with. They are less messy than most paints and markers, blunt (removing the risk of sharp points present when using a pencil or pen), typically non-toxic, and available in a wide variety of colors. These characteristics make them particularly good instruments for teaching small children to draw in addition to being used widely by student and professional artists.

Crayons are easy to draw with it, and more fun then colored pens, markers or pencils. They are also relatively soft and blunt and because all of that perfect for little children who cannot hurt themselves. At the same time, student and professional artists also use crayons because they come in variety of colors, produce interesting textures and are easy to use.

Crayon History

American market had many manufacturers of crayons. One of the first was E. Steiger & Co. who made and sold wax crayons since 1881 in boxes of 6, 12, and 18 colors. As a child I couldn’t wait to color in my coloring book. I wanted to color within the lines. I was so proud of myself that I was able to accomplished it. My parents were happy with whatever I created. I was not an artist but thought my drawings were special. Early French artists such as Francois Clouet and Nicholas L’agneau used wax crayons in their art and many do still. I taught I was the next artist of the world.
