Rejuvenate Your Mind and Body to Get Back to Business

Lazy Fat Cat

For those of you living in the US, being with loved ones on Thanksgiving may be something you were looking forward to all year. For those outside of the US, I’m sure you can relate this to any festive gathering. Anyway, now it is over and you are left with the fallout. A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog on healthy habits during the holidays and I don’t know about you but I over indulged. Instead of beating myself up for it, I decided to do something about it and write this post in continuation on how to stay healthy during the holidays. It’s time to get off the couch like the lazy cat in the photo above and get back to business!

Here are 10 ways to put you rejuvenate your mind and body to get back to business after a big holiday.

1. Be Thankful

Ok, you over indulged, so did I, forgive yourself. Don’t feel guilty about it. Instead be thankful for the time you were able to spend enjoying yourself, family and friends. This is a great opportunity to show others how thankful you are too. In business and in your social life, a personal gift is a memorable way to say “thank you”.

2. Rehydrate

We literally can’t live without it and replenishment after the holidays is just what the body is probably craving. Did you have a traditional Thanksgiving meal? I did and just the sodium in the turkey alone is usually enough to make our organs cry out in protest. So be kind to your body and hydrate. Drinking water is also a natural way to flush out toxins and a natural weight loss solution because it makes your stomach feel full therefore you eat less.

3. Detox

Although drinking water is a good start to detoxification, there are other natural ways to detox your body that are simple. Trade in a cup of coffee in the morning for hot water and fresh lemon juice. Thinking you may need some more flavor, herbal teas are also a great natural way of getting rid of the toxins in our systems. I love tea. I drink it all day, everyday.

4. Juicing

Juicing sounds so hard and expensive. Between all of the ingredients and purchasing a high-powered blender or juicer, it all just seems so complicated but it actually isn’t. Before you have lunch, have some juice. By making your own juice you control your sugar and nutrient intake. This will not only cleanse your system but also boost your immunity. Blended together apples, celery, ginger, parsley, cucumber, fresh lemon juice and cinnamon are a powerful antioxidant. If you don’t have a blender handy, consider infusing your water with fruit, mint, cucumber or cinnamon. I use my Flavorade Cup all the time!

5. Put your Freezer to Use

Get those leftovers out of your refrigerator. One good way to avoid the temptation that comes with looking at Thanksgiving leftovers is to freeze them. I froze all of my leftovers in portions so now when I have a taste for some Thanksgiving food I can reach right into the freezer and without too much guilt because the portions are controlled.

6. Herbal teas

I briefly touched on herbal teas earlier in the post but there is a tea out there for just about anything that ails you. There are a lot of herbs that we may never consider ingesting like dandelion. When I first saw dandelion tea I thought, the little yellow flower, I’m supposed to drink this? But it has many different medicinal uses. So why not swap out a soda or cup of coffee for a cup of tea? Peppermint or any detox tea like red clover, dandelion, chai, ginger and green tea are all perfect options to aid in getting your system back to normal.

7. Eat Your Greens

Grab a serving of green leafy vegetables, the greener the better. Leafy greens along with other green vegetables such as broccoli, brussel sprouts and green beans are all great for digestion. Animal products, white sugars and refined carbs should always come second to vegetables. The more vibrant the color, the healthier it is for you. If you really want to challenge yourself, take a break from dairy and red meat and follow a Mediterranean diet which is comprised of fatty acids, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats; a great place to start.

8. Fiber

We rarely want to think about why we need fiber, but we do. Fiber aids in flushing out your bowels. Not hard to come by naturally through eating more fruits and veggies, fiber also comes in the form of supplements. It is important to drink water when you take fiber, the two together acts as a flush for your system.

9. Get moving

So it is certainly not the first time we have noted exercise as being beneficial for your mind, body and soul, but it is so important that it has once again made the list. Go for a walk or jog, take yoga or an aerial silk class. Whatever you do, MOVE YOUR BODY. Second only to eating, exercising will keep your body healthy, active and looking young. Finding 20 minutes a day to do some type of cardio exercise is what we all need and your heart will love you for it.

10. Meditate

This doesn’t mean that you have to light incense and chant (although that is great too), but it does mean that you have to take a moment to unplug, even your computer needs to be shut down sometimes and being that your brain is your body’s computer, it needs to shut down sometimes too. Make time for yourself, do something that brings you joy. Reading, knitting, hiking or just taking a hot bath with essential oils and/or bubbles maybe just what your body needs to reboot, essential oils or bubbles.

If we truly are what we eat than healthy living starts with our eating habits. But that is just where it starts, healthy eating habits contributes to how healthy our success in business will be also. Meditation opens the door to thinking freely and inspires great ideas. A healthy mind and body is so important for your marketing and creativity. It is through centering our minds and bodies by simply unplugging from the world and remaining healthy that makes us fit and ready to get back to business after the holidays.

Here is some more great advice on how to relieve stress during the holidays so that you can get back to work with a clear mind!

  1. Great list here, Arleen! Roadmap to rejuvenating your mind and body after over indulging during holiday season (and no only) – sending you some social media love. I would add to the mix some good laughs. Nothing releases stress (or feeling guilty of that overindulgence you mention) like a super funny comedy or tv show and laughing your ehm out, better with loved ones or a movie buddy 😉

  2. These are all good tips, Arleen. I have never tried dandelion tea, and somehow don’t think I ever will, but I am a tea drinker and enjoy peppermint, apple-cinnamon, and black currant teas. I like buying the variety packs where you get six different flavors. Peach is pretty tasty, too!

To get your creativity flowing, I’d add “listening to music” to the list. By combining it with dancing, you’d get some exercise! 🙂

  3. I never thought about freezing leftovers! What a wonderful idea! I love herbal teas and recently discovered white tea…I absolutely am hooked on it and it has very little caffeine. Laughter is the elixir for everything, and the whole keep moving thing is really important! I make a point of deep breathing, too, even when I am not meditating…:) What a great list! Thanks for sharing it 🙂

    • Jacqueline- I will freeze the leftovers and then when I defrost them they do not taste as good so I throw it out so I don’t feel guilty because I tried to make it work. I drink some type of tea all day long. I have to make it so it forces me to get off of the computer and get away from the business for a short time. Hey something is better than nothing.

  4. I’m about ready to break down and finally buy a juicer 🙂 I drink water nonstop, so that’s always a plus. Exercise is really going downhill now that I’m living in a northern climate again. Who wants to go jogging when it’s dark and 15 degrees? Though that doesn’t excuse my ignoring the treadmill….

  5. Hello; Once again you have delivered a solid post on how to overcome the holiday’s effect on your mind and body. I love that you decided to take action. And even more i love that your first point was about gratitude. I did pretty good during thanksgiving. Not as good as last year when i lost four pounds but I managed to drop the two i did gain by the following tuesday. I think I should talk about exercise here. I have found that one of the best ways to make it a regular part of your day is to multi task. I don’t mean playing a computer game or talking on the phone. What I do is take an uplifting or inspirational audio book with me. It makes the repetition of riding a stationary bike walking on a treadmill or pushing a rower go by quicker and I usually finish with either a easier spirit clearer mind or both. I often get good ideas then or during the shower afterwards. Hope this helps someone. Thanks again for the great post and take care, Max

  6. This all makes so much sense. In Canada, we don’t have a huge Thanksgiving in November, but we’re well into holiday party season anyways. Drinking water is something I do nonstop, especially when it gets so dry. And I love herbal tea – my favourite is peppermint. But juices … hmm. Some of the combinations you mention sound very yummy. There may be a juicer on my Boxing Day shopping list!

  7. I’m happy to say I didn’t overindulge on Thanksgiving – however I find the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas difficult – some many great foods – especially baked foods. I have been meditating fairly regularly and am trying to exercise regularly but it’s harder since it’s cold out 🙂 – Herbal tea may help LOL. Love these tips to remind me to stay committed and that I’m not the only one out there wondering how I’m going to get through the season. 🙂

  8. Great list, Arleen 🙂

I was traveling during this break, had to attention some church functions, so don’t have to deal with any left overs. The break was certainly “busy”, but it was refreshing in that I broke apart from my regular schedule.

I do love the strategies mentioned here. I have tried many of these – like juicing (I do love juices – especially mango :D).

I don’t particularly meditate (although I want to, but the urge isn’t strong enough), but I do exercise – 2 mins every one of “active” hours – that’s 1 hour total.

Following this method isn’t hard, considering that I am not taking any classes this semester. But, that changes next semester; I going back to college in Jan, so I definitely need to dedicated an hour a day for exercising.

Anyways, thank you for sharing these, Arleen 🙂 Appreciate it! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  9. Hi Arleen,
Great list. I recently read that “Be thankful” is a nice way of saying “stop bitching and moaning”. Something as simple as switching from “What’s wrong with the day” to taking inventory of what is working just fine is a game changer.

This summer my daughter and I did a lot of juicing. Felt great! The only downside was the cleanup. The dishwasher seemed unable to get the fruit and veggie gunk off the parts, so everything had to be pre-scrubbed. Maybe Breville or Phillips can invent a self-cleaning model for us…

  10. Hi Arleen,

What great ideas to get us through the holidays! I’m a list-maker myself on paper and pen. I just love it when I cross things off! To me it is like getting all those post-its in my mind out and on that piece of paper. It does reduce stress levels.

Eating can be a big concern over the holiday season. Although many foods are tempting, I usually take a small bite of something that’s yummy and trow the rest away.

Your suggestion of hydration is the most important of all! Have a glass of water before you eat is my motto! It helps me to resist temptation.

As for food, being a vegetarian, I am always eating the “sides” as long as they are plain.

Thanks for these tips and I will pass it on.

  11. Hi Arleen – fabulous tips, and I try to follow a lot of them.

I’m not very good at drinking water – I find it hard to resist cups of tea instead, I’m afraid. I do now sometimes have the odd cup of camomile tea, though, and that’s supposed to be very good for you. I’ve also lately taken up meditation – I’m trying to have a 20 minute session every day.

I have recently bought a great juicer, but this was for medicinal purposes and I’m mainly using it to make fermented cabbage juice, which is decidedly NOT yummy but very therapeutic for intestinal problems. I’ve also made some fresh apple juice, which is delicious.

We’ve only got a small freezer, so can’t do too much in that line. My dogs make sure I keep moving and I’ve just this very day started going swimming again, too – shame you can’t take dogs to the pool, my collie would just love it!

Thanks for a lovely rejuvenating post, Arleen 🙂

  12. I really enjoyed this post. Growing up, tea was a big part of my family, I never understood why. It is interesting how helpful different teas can be for you. I like the advice about taking “ME” time to reflect and recharge. It is amazing how many obstacles can be removed when you do this!

    Thank you for sharing!!

  13. Hi Arleen

Of course we do not have Thanksgiving in Australia but we have pre Christmas parties happening everywhere at the moment. As it is summer here we have the long school holidays about to start.

They are great tips and I must say I am pretty good at the majority. We have a juicer and juice regularly. Our diet is healthy and I seldom skip a day without exercise. The one area I could improve is more regular meditation. I am a bit start stop with that one.

    Great advice.

  14. Hi Arleen,

Your tips are wonderful; at one time, I tried to become a vegetarian, I only lasted for 3 months ( was so difficult to be disciplined with the required diet). However, I noticed that I was sound psychologically, sharp in thinking and was not overweight during those periods.

We did not celebrate any thanksgiving day here in Nigeria, so everyday’s heavy diet continues.
I love your point 4, on juicing; will give it a try. Basically, will give all your listed points some trial.

    Thanks for sharing

  15. I’m actually chuckling at that photo Arleen, priceless and about how I felt after eating Thanksgiving too. Man oh man was that ever good.

Now I know everything you’re saying here is exactly what we all should do but I’ll just be honest with you and tell you besides drinking water, going back to what I normally eat and walking everyday weather permitting, I’m not doing anything else. LOL!!!

I’m horrible I know but I’ve never detoxed in my life and I’m not starting now. 😉

Great advice though and I should follow it, seriously but I know I won’t.

  16. Hey Arleen,

First off, love the picture of the cat! LOL.

December is always a great time to decompress, at the same time reflect on your accomplishments.

Right now, I’m writing out my goals as we speak and something I learned from a great mentor of mines. He said when you’re writing out your goals, just be outrageous!
I decided to take that route and for the first time, it actually feels good to be outrageous with my goals.

Also, I’ve learned this yet to take action on things that I’ve never done before. That means getting my body moving in the right direction and then scaling up on the goals. What I’ve noticed is that it’s easier for me to set my goals once I start moving.

Here’s an example that describes it best. Say, one of my goals is to lose 10 lbs. Even though, I want to lose 10 lbs, the first step is just getting myself to go to the gym. Once I start developing a routine, then from there start honing on the goal. I’ve found that it works great.

One thing that I’m going to start doing next year is juicing. Great reminder, because I’ve never been much of a juicer but there’s so many benefits to juicing.

Awesome article Arleen, just what I needed at the right time!

    • Nate- After all the holidays are gone we do need to do things to jump start our career with goals we want to meet. I like the idea of coming up with outrageous goals, if nothing else you can laugh which is a great stress reliever. Developing a routine does help hone in on your specific goal. Thank you for your great response.

  17. Thanks for this! We have both been stuck in a bit of a rut since Thanksgiving. Between missing family and friends and the festivities back home it has been harder to motivate ourselves to concentrate on our online work. These are awesome tips and a great overall reminder for us to get back into the rhythm of things.
