  1. Great post ,Arleen. In the past, I always got a great response when asking for my customer’s opinion. In fact, I WAS interested! How else to tailor a program especially for their needs? And corny as this sounds…once in a while I would take some special customers home baked cookies:) Being in a male dominated industry, I would joke, “How many of your male reps do that for ya George???” It got a lot of laughs and I would say more than a few orders….so corny:)

  2. Good tips. The in-person meeting may not be possible in all cases, especially where customers are spread across the country. And if you ask for opinions, you need to really listen and care about the answers. Overall, I think your tips all speak to the importance of getting to know your customers, respecting them as individuals and connecting on a personal level. That builds loyalty.

    • Donna- I agree that in-person are not always possible. Listening and responding what a customer has to say really shows you care. Today I got an email from a customer who suggested that I put our website on our invoices. I thought it was a great idea. I sent her a thank you note and she was very appreciate. About an hour later she placed another order.

  3. I follow up all sales made and ask if customers are satisfied with their product.
    I am willing to post products to client or meet them at a mutual place.

    A stationery company who my ex organisation did business with, always presented us with a large tin of chocolates.

    • Phoenicia- So many people are afraid to follow up to see if their customers were satisfied with a product. The fear that maybe they didn’t like it. I have one of my employees who does nothing but call on our customers and ask about their experience. I feel if we do not know what they are thinking, how can I improve.

  4. Arleen, I like the “bring mom’s special sauce”. To impress customers and get their business you need to tell them how you differ. Listening to the customers and through that identifying their needs also makes a lot of sense.

    I find this list quite interesting. You have provided a list of some key ways to maintain a healthy relationship with customers.

    Customers are human afterall and I strongly believe that building relationship with them brings them closer to us.

    But the problem is that a lot of people are unaware of the ways to bond with their customers. Maybe you can write a post on ‘How to build and maintain strong relationship with cutomers’

    • Tubin- I have been in business since the early nineties. I have a high rate of return customers. I have actually done a survey and asked why they keep coming back. One would think it was the price, instead it is the service that they receive. We do not treat our customers like they are a number. When we see a repeat order we take them for coming back.

  7. Such wonderful suggestion. I noticed almost all of them are customizing to the client’s needs. So many companies use a cookie cutter approach to their clients, that they just feel like they are “NEXT” in line. I am glad you understand that business needs customers, and customers are individuals.

    • William- I have to say after reading your comment, I thought of the pig in the Geico Commercial where he is trying to get a driver’s license and wants to ask a question and he is told NEXT. The reason they were able to make that commercial is because it does happen. All businesses need their customers

    doing any one of them to begin with, will definitely be a positive for your business!

    However, my biggest takeaway’s are #’s 2-4!

    I really think asking their opinion, (#2) totally increases their ongoing engagement and, (# 4) personalization and or customization are proven strategies!
