How do you turn Insomnia into Branding?

Insomnia BrandingSleep helps the brain. Chronic sleep deprivation can cause weight gain. Lack of sleep can also affect your mood. How can you turn those bouts of insomnia into creative ideas for promoting your company? We are going to help you make use of your insomnia by using that time to come up with brand ideas.

Branding is an important component of all sales, advertising and marketing techniques. Branding is what makes you distinctive. It differentiates you from your competition. Branding is the very foundation of marketing and advertising.

Sounds like this would work. I have been there and done that. There are over 64 million Americans who struggle with sleep. A study by the Department of Health and Human Services states by definition, insomnia is “difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep”. This equates to 1 in every 5 Americans. Turning to sleeping pills is not the answer and after a certain period of time they do not work anyway. I have to say that I am one of many who does not sleep. Here are ten things that we are told to do to help with sleep.

10 Tips To Beat Insomnia

  1. Avoid drinking caffeine after 6:00 PM.
  2. Avoid exercising before going to bed.
  3. Have a routine and go to bed at the same time each night.
  4. Keep the room dark.
  5. Stay off the computer at night.
  6. Keep the bedroom cool.
  7. Take the television out of the room.
  8. Read a book before going to bed.
  9. Avoid liquids before going to bed so you don’t keep getting up for potty breaks.
  10. I love the suggestion to take a hot bath before going to bed. So if you don’t sleep at least you went to bed clean.

None of these have worked for me. So I have turned my insomnia into a positive. With all the frustration insomnia causes, learn to put a twist on the problem. Instead of taking the time out during the day to come up with ideas on how to brand your company, use the time when you can’t sleep. Many of us can’t sleep because our minds are full of thoughts. The problem is that we keep going over the same thought all night. I say expand your thoughts and start thinking creatively. After a while, you will start to feel that you are accomplishing something and sleep will come.

Many of us worry all night about something that needs to be done to get our message out. So what do you need to do to brand your company? Deliver your message, create loyalty, confirm your credibility, and connect with your target audience.

Turn Your Insomnia into Marketing Ideas

  1. Write down the words that come into your head.
  2. Have a trade show coming up? Think what makes your company special.
  3. We already know that there are millions who can’t sleep. So, handing out sleep masks with your logo is a branding opportunity for your company and is surely going to appeal to those you have insomnia.
  4. Turning to pills is an answer for many. Turn that into a branding opportunity and use a prescription bottle with candy as a promotional item. (You can go crazy with this one.)
  5. Promotional ear plugs will block out excess noise (while building awareness of your brand).
  6. Provide rewards such as our promotional healthcare products too.

Insomnia is like dieting, we are always looking for a new way to overcome lack of sleep. Did you know that there is actually National Sleep Awareness week in March? There are a number of techniques and ideas to help you cure your insomnia. If it is stress-related, I find that thinking of creative ideas helps distract my mind. Not only do I come up with ideas but after a while, yes even me, who has had insomnia since I was a kid is finding this new twist is actually helping!

What time of day or in what atmosphere do you find that you come up with your best marketing strategies?

  1. It makes total sense… but what happens when you can’t get everything out? I’ll be up even longer.

    • Hi Raquel, You don’t have to get it out all in one night. You will find that knowing that you are able to write down some thoughts, will actually help you sleep. Many of us can’t sleep because we keep thinking the same over and over again. Writing down a thought, just takes that thought out of your head for the night. It works as I have had insomnia all my life and I am starting to see an improvement. Thank you for taking the time to respond

  2. I do many of the ting syou mention. I try to keep the room cool and find that really does help me fall asleep. When My brain is buzzing way. I do write done what I’m thinking and then I’ll read a totally unrelated book and that REALLY works. It never fails I am able to nob of within a few minutes. 🙂

  3. I usually sleep well but know what it is like when you can’t sleep and have ideas. A guy I worked with always had a pen and notepad near his bed and used to jot down notes and then was able to sleep. I have tried and it works and it beats trying to get back to sleep with ideas or thoughts racing through your mind.

  5. Interesting idea… having a routine somewhat helps me. Best way for me to overcome insomnia is cuddling 😀

Anyways, interesting idea about creative ideas to fight insomnia. Does it really help you? I have tried something like that without realizing it, actually… I gave up on trying to sleep and got up to do other stuff – i wrote blog posts, i worked on my sites, etc. – bu i ended up not sleeping at all that night. Next night i did NOT have problems falling asleep but i suspect it was because i was tired of not sleeping at all the previous night LOL

    • Actually, I have done that too, where I’d put in extra work in the middle of the night. But if you can’t sleep, at least you are being productive. However, in order to keep myself on a routine schedule I find it better to stay in bed and write down my ideas. Getting my thoughts out of my head helps me to fall asleep. Thanks for your reply! 🙂 (PS cuddling with my dog works for me too 🙂 )

  6. I’m sure all of us have experienced insomnia at one time or another. For me these bouts came because of worrying about things I could not control. I do agree that this is the time to accomplish a few things, including marketing ideas. Your post will come in handy the next time I go through a bout of insomnia.

  7. You talk about marketing ideas and insomnia … I can’t say I suffer at bedtime, but I sometimes am wide awake at 4 am with ideas churning. At 8pm is when I pay for this.

I come up with my best ideas when I can’t write them down, because I am supposed to be paying attention to something else.

    • Hi Leora,

I hear you about ideas churning at off hours. I find if I don’t focus on one idea and keep going over and over it in my head, and write down the many ideas, I have basically released them so I can really think about them in the morning. I also come up with ideas when I can’t write them down, but having a voice recorder handy also has helped that problem. Thank you for taking the time to respond to our blog.

  8. I am a mom, blogger, and entrepreneur and I suffer from insomnia because I am always thinking of ways to make things better. The ideas that you presented on brand awareness are so awesome! I try to do my IPA’s (Income Producing Activities) only during certain times, but it is my creative mind that is in high gear at night. I will definitely follow your advice 🙂

    • Hi Candace,
It is hard to shut off an active mind. I have tried to deal with this problem most of my life. Getting it off my mind and out of my head has made a big difference. The other thing to do is get off the computer by 8:00 PM. The signals you get from the computer will also keep you up. Thank you for stopping by

  9. I usually do my best thinking in the shower. Perhaps because I often shower a second time at night and night is my best time for a clear mind. My second best thoughts come right before I fall asleep when I am in that twilightish sleep but I have a hard time remembering those thoughts which drive me nuts!

Great read and good advice :o)
